AgriPV-Nexus is driving innovation to transform Mediterranean farming. By combining nature-based solutions with modern technology, we aim to help small-scale farmers adapt to climate change and build a sustainable future.
Climate-Resilient Farming
We are co-developing optimal ways to combine sustainable farming with solar energy (agrivoltaics) to protect crops and support rural communities in the Mediterranean. This will be done by:
- Setting up 4 real-world Living Labs where these integrated systems are tested directly on the field.
- Creating easy-to-use digital tools, including a farmers’ decision-support tool, an interactive digital twin, and an e-learning platform, to help farmers make informed decisions.
- Using solar panels to provide beneficial shade and save water, acting as a natural catalyst that makes it easier for farmers to adopt eco-friendly practices.
Agriculture and Clean Energy in Harmony
We bring farming and clean energy together to reduce climate impacts, support local biodiversity, and make agriculture stronger and more adaptable.
- Collaborating across our 4 Living Labs to test, monitor, and refine farming practices that are tailored to the specific needs of each local environment.
- Applying hands-on, natural farming methods such as composting, smart water harvesting, crop diversification, and soil protection (mulching) to boost farm resilience.
Healthier Soils and Ecosystems
We measure and prove the real-world environmental benefits of combining agriculture with solar energy, focusing heavily on restoring the ecosystem and enriching the soil.
- Using advanced digital models to find the perfect balance between nature and technology for different climates.
- Introducing a simple, affordable way for small-scale farmers to measure and verify the carbon stored in their soil, helping them access new opportunities in carbon farming.
Enabling Sustainable Transformation
We turn our field research and project results into clear, actionable advice to help scale sustainable farming across the region and beyond.
- Developing practical, evidence-based policy recommendations to support the wider adoption of sustainable agriculture.
- Guiding national and European strategies on shared land use (farming and energy), carbon storage, and the broader green transition.
